One knight takes on f2, then on e4: Karthikeyan beats Cheparinov in 34

October 5, 2026 · Cheparinov 0–1 Karthikeyan

After 24.Ng1 · Stockfish −2.23 → −3.39

GM Murali Karthikeyan (Jelica PEP Goračići, 2647), the highest-rated player in the Serbian Super League, beat GM Ivan Cheparinov (Radnik Surdulica, 2631) in 34 moves in round 2.

Cheparinov played 24.Ng1 with 19:48 left. Stockfish wanted 24.Ne1, and counted Black clearly better before (−2.23) and winning after (−3.39). 24...Nxf2, its first choice, came straight back, and after 25.Qc2 the same knight took the rook: 25...Nxe4. Then 28...Qh4+ and 29...Qxh2+ took the queens off.

Radnik Surdulica still won the match 3½–2½.

Go back to 24.Ng1 and find 24.Ne1. Then play the ending on against the engine.
